The New No Normal for Business

Business / August 28, 2020

We are in the midst of an unprecedented global crisis. An economic recession caused by a global pandemic, in a way that has never before occurred in history. It seems obvious to say that most businesses have experienced change as a result. For many, those changes are profound and even catastrophic. They are certainly not normal.

We hear a lot on the news about the ‘New Normal’ and how it will affect us all. We also hear many people pushing for the resumption of how things were before. A push towards a return to the status quo. But the reality is that what this pandemic has exposed is that there is no normal. At least when it comes to business and entrepreneurship.

What we’re discovering as a society is that whatever works, works. Especially for those who are willing to push the boundaries and try new things in the face of adversity. They are the ones managing to find success, even in the ashes of what they had before.

The truth that many don’t wish to accept is that we don’t have a normal to return to. We have discovered that businesses can work in a variety of strange ways and still gain success. So what use is there for old notions of how we should do things?

What people yearn for when they seek a ‘new normal’ is a return to stability. They long for a fictional past in which they could follow a certain path in business and achieve success. But in truth, that path never existed. The entrepreneur has always had to innovate and push boundaries to find their niche.

Perhaps it’s time to stop yearning for a new normal, and a return to stability. Instead, it’s time to take the lessons of what is going on and realize that there is no normal. Indeed, you don’t need normal at all. You can find success no matter what if you’re willing to put in the work and you have the passion.
